“…it’s time to laugh…”
Lumpkin’s Big Top is a behind-the-scenes story of a popular children’s television show, starring America’s favorite clown Lumpkin. The story revolves around Lumpkin and all of his cohorts, on a not-so-average day on the set of Lumpkin’s Big Top. Through the revelation that computer animation is about to supercede live actors on the popular show, the story’s purpose turns dark, as the clowns of Lumpkin’s Big Top reveal the flawed human beings they are behing the colorful makeup and costumes. Essentially turning the audience into its own character, Lumpkin and the rest of the cast discover the dark humor and twisted nature of what happens when sex, betrayal, revenge, ego and…clowns collide. The play challenges us to explore the point where reality morphs into absurdity; and plays with the notion of “ what you see isn’t always what you get”.
