Press Release

On November 21 you better not pout and you better not cry because David Bowie’s coming to town in New Millennium Theatre Company’s (NMTC) latest production: The David Bowie Hepzikat Velvet Flarney Solstice Spectacular…Live From Space! (David Bowie’s Christmas Special 1977 Network Edit). In this high energy holiday romp, based off a fictional Christmas Special that never was, audiences will be treated to a star studded tribute to the classic Andy Williams Christmas Specials of the 70s. This one of kind variety show spectacular features the kind of star power that only ‘Ziggy Stardust’ could command. Character appearances by Mick Jagger, Annie Lennox, Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithfull, Nipsey Russell, and Charo are just the tip of the iceberg; a special appearance by the Ghost of Freddy Mercury will remind us all of the joy of brotherhood and spirit of giving that the holiday and Solstice season brings. And when the mysterious Bizarro Bowie appears to reveal his jaded past, it’s a race for time to save the holidays from the ultimate universal implosion. But with this many celebrities, what could possibly go wrong?

Writer/Director Steven Attanasie, whose previous New Millennium credits include Cubicle: An Office Space Musical and Manos: Rock Opera of Fate believes the production came from the bottomless pit of some network archive. “Thinking about a David Bowie special that never aired was all the spark I needed even though it has resulted in several mental breakdowns. When you’re dealing with the kind of egos that these characters bring out in actors, you kind of expect that,” says Attanassie. Matt Russell, who has taken on the role of Bizarro Bowie agreed when adding, “to fully realize the role, I’ve had to sleep with a bag of glitter every night.”

The David Bowie Hepzikat Velvet Flarney Solstice Spectacular…Live From Space! kicks off New Millennium Theatre Company’s tribute to the holiday season, with the Flaming Dames Torch Cabaret opening their new revue ‘Have a Very Sexy Christmas’ December 5th down the street at the popular Spot bar and restaurant. Entering the final months of their 10th anniversary season, New Millennium Theatre Company have become veterans at bringing seasonal spirit with a twist to Chicago’s north side with past hits like The Flaming Dames in Naughty and Nice and Sin-ta Claus City. So fasten your seatbelts and get ready for the ride of the Solstice season.

The David Bowie Hepzikat Velvet Flarney Solstice Spectacular…Live From Space! or David Bowie’s Christmas Special 1977 (Network Edit) runs Friday and Saturday nights at 10:30 pm, November 21 through December 27 at National Pastime Theater, 4139 N.
