Nuts And Mints

By Marcie Schwalm
Directed by James D. Smith
July 12, 2001 - August 12, 2000
Boxer Rebellion Theater

Nuts & Mints involved a woman plagued by society's predetermined view of the "perfect" woman. From the stress and anxiety of planning her own wedding to the ludicrous advertisements of a theme restaurant (that doesn't really owe all of its success to great food), the main character painstakingly had to decide how she wanted her life to be. Would she marry a terrific guy who treats her with respect and dignity? Would she take action and make a statement about the portrayal of women at work, on television, and in their own homes? With a couple of cans of gas, a single match and a brick, she attempted to ignite doubt in the beliefs of those around her. Sprinkled with laughter, filled with passion, glazed with just a touch of audience interaction and baked over a fierce three-alarm fire, this play was anything but "sugar, spice and everything nice".

Director's Note

Planning a wedding can be a very daunting task. Trying to change the way society depicts and treats women, however, can be close to impossible. The latter task that the main character in Nuts & Mints, Alicia,  sets for herself is what initially attracted me to direct Nuts & Mints. How can a single person change the world's depiction of the "ideal" woman? Alicia answers this question by risking the one thing in her life that many find to be one of the most important days in a person's life, her own wedding. I can not say that the choices Alicia makes are necessarily right or wrong. But just as her fiancé Mike can not help himself from loving Alicia, neither could I. Her boldness, strength, tender heart and yes, even her emotional quirks, are all the qualities that attracted me to her and to this play. You may find yourself asking why Alicia makes the decisions she does, but don't worry, that is what I want you to do. I invite you to see Nuts & Mints  and to come and join Alicia as she enters her journey of love, marriage, arson and theme restaurants.
